Tripura makes historic leap in solar power generation, aims for 50 MW within a year
Tripura has achieved a significant milestone by successfully generating 2 megawatts (MW) of electricity from solar energy, marking a major step towards energy self-reliance for the state. With a target of producing 50 MW within the next year, Tripura is making great strides in renewable energy production.
The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) issued a press release highlighting the success of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024. This initiative encourages rooftop solar energy generation, allowing households to not only become self-sufficient in energy but also to earn money by selling surplus electricity back to the grid.
According to the TSECL, there have been 15,730 registrations under the scheme in Tripura, with solar installations completed in 591 locations. 516 beneficiaries have already received government subsidies, and 117 consumers have managed to reduce their electricity bills to zero this month. These consumers collectively earned Rs 43,545 by contributing excess electricity to the grid, with the earnings directly credited to their bank accounts.
Consumers can avail themselves of a government subsidy of up to Rs 85,800 under the scheme, with a 1 kW solar panel system capable of generating approximately 100 units of electricity monthly. This is enough to meet the energy needs of an average household, making it not only a cost-saving initiative but also an income-generating opportunity.
TSECL emphasized the importance of transforming rooftops into sources of renewable energy, especially in a time of rising electricity costs. By participating in this scheme, consumers can not only save money but also earn by supplying unused power to the grid, moving towards financial independence.
With a target of 50 MW of solar energy production within the next year, TSECL urged all electricity consumers in Tripura to register on the government portal and participate in this groundbreaking initiative. This move towards renewable energy is not only beneficial for the environment but also for the financial well-being of the people of Tripura.
