Tripura has achieved a major milestone in its healthcare sector with the successful completion of the third kidney transplant at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital. This accomplishment signifies a significant step towards enhancing advanced healthcare services in the state.
The kidney transplant, which took place on June 30, was carried out in collaboration with Shija Hospital, Manipur, under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The procedure, which involved a non-related donor and a recipient with high antibody levels, was provided entirely free of cost, highlighting the state’s commitment to public healthcare.
The patient, who was previously dependent on dialysis with high creatinine levels, is now stable post-transplant with significantly improved levels and no longer requires dialysis. The state government is providing immunosuppressive medications free of charge to support the patient’s recovery.
This successful kidney transplant is the third of its kind at AGMC following previous procedures in June and November 2024. These transplants were carried out by the hospital’s Nephrology and Urology departments, part of the nine super-speciality services introduced since 2018. The hospital is now preparing for 8-10 additional transplants in August 2025 and is also working with the MOHAN Foundation to facilitate deceased donor transplants, further expanding access to life-saving procedures for individuals without living donors.
Dr Sankar Chakraborty, the medical superintendent of GBP Hospital, emphasized the hospital’s long-standing commitment to serving the people of Tripura and neighboring regions. He highlighted the introduction of nine super-speciality departments since 2018, including Nephrology and Urology, which have successfully performed kidney transplants in collaboration with Shija Hospital.
Dr Chakraborty also mentioned the hospital’s plans to facilitate deceased donor transplants in the future, in addition to living donor transplants, to provide more options for patients in need of kidney transplants. The success of these procedures has been a significant achievement for the state and has eliminated the need for residents to travel outside Tripura for such critical healthcare services.
Overall, the successful kidney transplants at AGMC and GBP Hospital represent a significant advancement in healthcare accessibility in Tripura and demonstrate the state’s dedication to providing quality medical care to its residents.
