Tripura has set its sights on boosting milk, meat, and egg production with a proposed project worth Rs 431.71 crore submitted to the North Eastern Council (NEC). Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha made the announcement during the second high-level meeting of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), emphasizing the importance of self-sufficiency in essential food items for the state and the broader Northeast region.
Dr. Saha highlighted the significance of animal husbandry and fisheries in Tripura’s economic growth and in meeting the nutritional needs of its people. He stressed the need for a modern animal disease detection laboratory in the state and called for central assistance to enhance the dairy, poultry, and fisheries sectors.
Efforts to improve milk production include initiatives such as artificial insemination using sex-sorted semen, strengthening dairy cooperatives, providing financial support to women in poultry farming, and offering incentives to entrepreneurs under the National Livestock Mission.
In the fisheries sector, Tripura is focusing on expanding and renovating water bodies under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana and the Chief Minister Matsya Vikas Yojana. The state has allocated around ₹50 crore from its budget over the past five years for fishery development, in addition to ₹76.4 crore under the PMMSY.
Furthermore, a separate proposal amounting to ₹816.5 crore has been submitted to the NEC to make Tripura self-reliant in fish production and to support the nutritional needs of other northeastern states. The government is committed to bridging the gap in per capita availability of essential food items and ensuring food security for its citizens.
