Tripura has set an ambitious target to empower 1.35 lakh women as ‘Lakhpati Didis’ during the current financial year, according to officials from the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM). This decision to revise the target was made during a state-level steering committee meeting chaired by Rural Development Department Secretary Abhishek Singh on November 15 at the civil secretariat.
Tarit Kanti Chakma, CEO of TRLM, announced that the previous target of creating 1.08 lakh ‘Lakhpati Didis’ had already been achieved, leading to the decision to increase the goal. He assured that necessary initiatives would be taken to reach the revised target, and the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) would be informed accordingly.
In a move to support the empowerment of these women, Chief Minister Manik Saha distributed ₹100 crore to 1,00,000 ‘Lakhpati Didis’ on October 25 to further boost their income-generating activities. South Tripura district currently leads the state with the highest number of ‘Lakhpati Didis’, totaling 21,898.
The ‘Lakhpati Didi’ initiative is part of a central government program aimed at improving the livelihoods of women in rural households by helping them achieve sustainable and increased income levels. The program has been successful in Tripura, with more women expected to benefit from the revised target set for this financial year.
