Tripura’s statewide bandh, which was originally scheduled for October 13, has been postponed to October 23 for 24 hours, as announced by Tipra Motha Party MLA Ranjit Debbarma on October 10. This decision was made in consideration of the upcoming Diwali festival, after numerous residents across Tripura requested the delay to avoid disruption during the festive period.
Debbarma explained to reporters that the Tripura Civil Society and other stakeholders have decided to reschedule the bandh out of respect for the public sentiment. Despite the delay, the strike will still proceed later this month, with emergency and essential services such as ambulances, fire services, police, judiciary, and utility vehicles remaining operational without interruption.
The purpose of the bandh is to press the government for urgent administrative action on a range of key demands. These demands include identifying illegal foreign migrants in accordance with Ministry of Home Affairs guidelines, establishing detention camps in every district, creating a Special Task Force with BSF and Assam Rifles personnel, implementing the Inner Line Permit system, enforcing the Tri-Partite Tiprasa Accord, recognizing the Roman script for Kokborok, and invalidating fraudulent SC/ST certificates. Additionally, the demands refer to the implementation of the Tri-Partite Agreement signed with ATTF-NLFT in September 2024.
MLA Debbarma urged citizens to participate in the bandh peacefully and assured that essential services and daily necessities would not be impacted during the 24-hour strike. The rescheduled bandh is expected to draw attention to the pressing issues facing Tripura and push for necessary action from the government.
