Tripura is currently facing challenging weather conditions as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for three districts in the state. Sepahijala, West Tripura, and Khowai districts are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall along with squally winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph over the next 24 hours.
The inclement weather is a result of a deep depression over the Northwest Bay of Bengal, according to IMD forecasts. Despite all eight districts in Tripura receiving rainfall, there have been no major incidents reported so far. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has assured that district administrations are on high alert and prepared to handle any potential floods.
Agartala, the state capital, has already recorded 25 mm of rain in the past 24 hours. Flight operations were affected on Thursday with two flights from Kolkata to Agartala being cancelled, but the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has confirmed that operations have resumed normally on Friday.
An AAI official has stated that the persistent showers are likely to continue as predicted by the IMD, attributing the weather system over the Bay of Bengal as the cause. Residents in Tripura have largely stayed indoors due to the sporadic rain, impacting daily routines. Fortunately, there have been no reports of damage to property or loss of life at this time.
Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging residents to exercise caution during this period of unpredictable weather. Stay tuned for further updates as Tripura braves through the ongoing rainy spell.
