The State-Level Programme for International Mother Language Day 2026 was celebrated with great enthusiasm and cultural fervor at the Sukanta Academy Auditorium in Agartala today. The event, organized to commemorate the global struggle for linguistic rights and to honor the martyrs of the 1952 language movement, was formally inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister for Higher Education, Shri Kishor Barman.
The program saw a large gathering of educators, linguists, students, and cultural activists who came together to celebrate the rich linguistic tapestry of Tripura.
Empowering Regional Languages through Education
In his inaugural address, Minister Kishor Barman highlighted the state government’s relentless efforts to integrate mother tongues into the higher education framework. He emphasized that learning in one’s native language is crucial for cognitive development and the preservation of cultural roots.
”Language is the soul of a community. Our government, under the guidance of the New Education Policy (NEP), is committed to ensuring that languages like Bengali and Kokborok receive the academic prominence they deserve. We want our students to be global citizens without losing their linguistic identity,” the Minister stated.

- Tribute to Martyrs: The ceremony began with a solemn floral tribute to the portraits of the language martyrs, symbolizing the state’s respect for those who fought for the right to speak their mother tongue.
Focus on Sukanta Academy
The choice of Sukanta Academy as the venue underscored the government’s focus on youth and science-based education in local languages. Officials from the Directorate of Higher Education and several prominent academicians were present, echoing the sentiment that linguistic diversity is Tripura’s greatest strength.
The event concluded with an award ceremony for students who excelled in state-level essay and debate competitions held in various regional languages.
