Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha made a significant announcement on August 3, revealing plans for the state’s first international cricket stadium to be located at Narsinghgarh, Agartala. The stadium is expected to be completed by December of this year.
During the inauguration of the K.C. Girls’ School Cricket Ground and the launch of a celebrity T10 exhibition match between Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) and Bengal Tigers in Kamalpur, Dhalai district, CM Saha emphasized the importance of keeping politics out of sports. He stated that the government is dedicated to promoting genuine talent and ensuring transparency in selections.
Describing the day as “historic for Kamalpur,” the chief minister shared his involvement with the stadium project during his time as the TCA president. He recalled the challenges faced in 2017 when the construction was disorganized and chaotic, and how he intervened to bring about necessary changes. He credited the efforts of the current TCA committee for reaching the milestone.
CM Saha criticized the former CPIM-led government for politicizing cricket and suppressing real talent, alleging that skilled players were overlooked due to political favoritism. He claimed that even Ranji selections were influenced by party affiliation, causing widespread resentment. He highlighted the change brought about in 2018 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The chief minister emphasized the government’s focus on meritocracy in sports and all other sectors, including employment. He stated that job appointments are made based on merit with complete transparency, contrasting this with the opposition’s alleged spread of misinformation through political networks.
CM Saha also announced plans to develop additional sports infrastructure throughout the state to nurture local talent. Despite facing political obstacles during the construction of the international stadium, he expressed determination to overcome challenges previously created by the CPIM.
In closing, the chief minister expressed optimism about the future of cricket in Tripura once the stadium is completed. He envisioned the state hosting international matches with top-tier players, creating new opportunities for young athletes.
