Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has directed the state’s Disaster Management Authority to remain vigilant as heavy rains have caused rivers to swell, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert.
Speaking to reporters on May 30, Chief Minister Saha stated that preparations are underway to handle the situation. “I have already discussed with the Disaster Management Authority and we will hold a meeting tomorrow. I have instructed them to maintain strict vigilance, and they are working accordingly.”
According to the IMD report, areas like Sonamura, Bishramganj, and Mohanbhog in Sepahijala district have recorded the highest rainfall at around 21 cm. In West Tripura district, Agartala recorded 13.6 cm of rainfall. The heavy rains have caused water from the Haora river to enter nearby villages around Agartala city.
West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar has visited the affected areas for inspection. The IMD has issued a red alert for North and Unakoti districts and an orange alert for the entire state, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall and squally winds.
Major rivers like Haora, Gomati, Khowai, and Muhuri are flowing above the bed or warning levels due to the continuous rainfall. The Tripura Disaster Management Authority is mobilizing emergency equipment such as boats and life-saving jackets to deal with the situation.
Several areas have reported incidents of uprooted trees and damage to electricity lines due to the adverse weather conditions. The authorities are urging residents to stay safe and take necessary precautions as the heavy rains continue to impact the region.
