Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha emphasized the importance of integrating technology and artificial intelligence (AI) into disaster management efforts to reduce loss of life and property during a speech at the Secretariat today.
During the launch of various initiatives under the Revenue Department, Dr. Saha highlighted the necessity of public awareness, technological adoption in rescue operations, and comprehensive skill development for workers and volunteers involved in disaster response.
Among the programs unveiled by the Chief Minister was the State Disaster Management Plan for the financial year 2024–25. Additionally, he inaugurated several initiatives, including the Technology Demonstration Unit, Civil Defence Training Scheme, 26 automated weather stations and rain gauges, the Disaster Management Equipment Verification Portal, and the Change of Land Use (Diversion of Land) Portal. These initiatives were implemented at a total cost of ₹50 lakh.
Dr. Saha stressed the significance of utilizing technology and AI in disaster preparedness and response in today’s technological era. He referred to the challenges posed by recent calamities such as Cyclone Sitrang (2022), Mocha (2023), Remal (2024), and severe floods in 2018 and 2024 as reasons for advancing preparation and enhancing disaster response mechanisms.
The Chief Minister also emphasized the need for proactive review and improvement of relief camp management systems and infrastructural readiness.
Regarding training initiatives, Dr. Saha announced that 2,880 volunteers would undergo training under the Civil Defence Training Scheme, with additional hands-on training available at the Technology Demonstration Unit in Hapania, Agartala. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for choosing Tripura as the project’s launch site.
Dr. Saha highlighted the importance of accurate and real-time weather forecasting for disaster mitigation. To achieve this, 26 automated weather stations and rain gauges have been installed across the state, with plans to establish a Doppler Weather Radar Station in Belonia.
The newly inaugurated Equipment Verification Portal will enable seamless tracking of disaster management equipment stored at various levels within the state, providing real-time insights into the availability and condition of rescue equipment.
Additionally, the Change of Land Use Portal aims to streamline and enhance transparency in land conversion approvals, fostering a more business-friendly environment in Tripura.
