In a groundbreaking move to address the growing health concerns among youth, Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha has proposed the inclusion of chapters on Sex Education and HIV/AIDS awareness in the school curriculum from Class 8 to 12. The announcement was made during a meeting of the Tripura Legislative Forum on AIDS at the Assembly lobby.
Dr. Saha, who also serves as the Health Minister, emphasized the importance of open and informed discussions on HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, and reproductive health among students. He stated that awareness is crucial for prevention and that the government will soon engage in discussions with the Education Department regarding this proposal.
Highlighting Tripura’s vulnerability due to its proximity to the Bangladesh border and the increased inflow of drugs, Dr. Saha stressed the necessity of such interventions. He suggested that political leaders allocate at least five minutes of their public speeches to address HIV/AIDS and drug-related issues, stating that even small efforts can have a significant impact.
Dr. Saha also noted a significant increase in drug destruction and seizures in 2024 compared to the previous year, reaffirming the state’s zero-tolerance policy on drugs. He urged legislators to utilize their funds to support HIV/AIDS patients and promote sports and cultural activities to steer youth away from risky behaviors.
Acknowledging that both boys and girls are affected by these issues, Dr. Saha emphasized the collective responsibility to protect them. Tripura, being the first state in India to introduce Red Ribbon Clubs in schools, continues to lead in awareness initiatives.
In conclusion, Dr. Saha called for unity among all stakeholders in the fight against HIV/AIDS and drug abuse, emphasizing that the virus does not discriminate based on political affiliations and should not be politicized. The proposed curriculum changes aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions regarding their health and well-being.
