Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has unveiled ambitious plans for infrastructure development in the state, including the construction of a cutting-edge multi-storeyed office complex equipped with advanced earthquake-resilient technology.
Addressing a seminar organized by the Indian Building Congress on infrastructure development in the Northeast region, Dr. Saha emphasized the state government’s commitment to technical innovation and strategic vision in driving forward infrastructure projects.
Recognizing the seismic vulnerability of the region, the Chief Minister highlighted the challenges of constructing high-rise buildings in Tripura, located in a high seismic zone. Nevertheless, he expressed confidence in the engineers who have embraced the challenge, incorporating base isolation technology with a triple friction pendulum system to ensure the upcoming office structure can withstand earthquakes up to 8.5 on the Richter scale.
The 14-storey building, to be located at Gurkhabasti, will bring together various government departments under one roof, promoting administrative efficiency and structural safety.
Dr. Saha also outlined the state’s focus on modernizing infrastructure, with an unprecedented ₹7,000 crore allocated in this year’s budget for development projects. Plans include upgrading the connectivity network, converting aging bridges to durable RCC concrete structures, and proposing a 449-kilometer ring road project under the Bharat Mala scheme to improve urban traffic flow in Agartala and surrounding areas.
The Chief Minister highlighted the progress made in national highway development, with 923 kilometers of national highways in Tripura and an additional 229 kilometers awaiting approval. Over half of the existing network has already been upgraded to double-lane capacity, enhancing connectivity within the state.
To address urban congestion, a new flyover is under construction in Agartala, connecting Radhanagar to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.
CM Saha praised the transformative leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting the remarkable transformation taking place in the Northeast. He emphasized Tripura’s strategic position for trade connectivity with Southeast Asia, facilitated by its proximity to Bangladesh and the region’s growing railway integration with the rest of India.
