Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has emphasized the importance of parents taking an active role in preventing drug abuse among children, warning that peer pressure can lead even high-performing students towards addiction. He made these remarks during the state-level Bell of Awareness programme organized by the Tripura State AIDS Control Society on International Youth Day.
Addressing nearly 6,000 students at Pragya Bhavan, Saha highlighted the alarming spread of HIV in the North East, with Tripura currently ranking fourth among the eight North Eastern states. He stressed the need for increased awareness and prevention efforts, particularly among young people.
As both the Chief Minister and Health Minister of Tripura, Saha urged parents to closely monitor their children’s activities and friendships, noting that casual drug use can quickly escalate to dependency. He encouraged students to build self-confidence and resist negative influences, suggesting that they seek help from teachers if needed.
Saha also mentioned Tripura’s zero-tolerance policy towards narcotics, aligning with the Centre’s campaign for a drug-free India. He expressed confidence in the collaborative efforts of the government, educators, parents, and youth in moving towards a HIV-free state.
The Tripura State AIDS Control Society is currently implementing HIV/AIDS awareness programmes in 1,187 government and aided schools, aiming to reach approximately 2.31 lakh students from Classes 8 to 12. Saha highlighted the support provided to 3,433 people living with HIV/AIDS in Tripura, who receive a monthly allowance of Rs 2,000 for their treatment and well-being.
