The Indian government is strongly pushing to accelerate economic development in the Northeast region. The Ministry of DoNER has announced the formation of a High-Level Task Force designed to attract substantial investments. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to transforming the Northeast into a thriving economic hub.
A key element of this development is the appointment of Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha as the task force’s convener. This decision highlights the importance of regional leadership in driving the investment agenda. The task force also includes other north eastern region chief ministers, and the Union Minister of MDoNER.
The primary objectives of the task force include:
Assessing the current investment landscape: This involves evaluating existing policies, incentives, and infrastructure.
Identifying high-potential sectors: Focus areas include agriculture, tourism, logistics, information technology, and renewable energy.
Developing a strategic roadmap: The task force will create a plan to attract both domestic and international investors.
Policy reforms: The task force will recommend changes to streamline approvals and improve the ease of doing business.
Creating investment clusters: Focused promotion of sectoral hubs such as agro-processing zones, tourism circuits, IT parks, and renewable energy corridors.
This initiative follows the 72nd Plenary of the North Eastern Council (NEC) held in Agartala. The task force is expected to submit its report to the NEC within six months, providing actionable recommendations to boost investment and economic growth.
