In a recent development, Tripura Congress MLA and former BJP Minister Sudip Roy Barman criticized Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman for his controversial statement claiming ownership of parts of Tripura. Barman accused Pradyot of making such remarks out of frustration and as a ploy to divert attention from the upcoming District Council and Village Committee elections.
The video of Pradyot declaring himself as the owner of Agartala, Teliamura, and Kanchanpur during a protest in New Delhi went viral on social media, sparking widespread debate. However, Pradyot later clarified that his statement was in response to the Amra Bangali party.
Speaking at the Pradesh Congress Bhavan, Barman refuted Pradyot’s claim, emphasizing that the true owners of Tripura are its people. He asserted, “If Pradyot still believes he is living in the princely era, he needs to understand that India is a sovereign democratic republic and princely states no longer exist.”
Barman suggested that Pradyot’s statement stemmed from dissatisfaction within Tipra Motha due to unfulfilled provisions of the Tiprasa Accord by the Central and state governments. He pointed out that with elections approaching, Pradyot’s provocative remarks were likely an attempt to shift focus and manipulate the sentiments of indigenous people.
Highlighting the need for a change in political approach, Barman urged Pradyot to reconsider his tactics if he wishes to make a meaningful contribution to the state’s politics. The incident has sparked a debate within Tripura’s political circles, with many questioning the motives behind such controversial statements.
