The Tripura government is implementing new measures to enhance the public distribution system (PDS) in the state, with a focus on transparency and consumer convenience. Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury recently announced the introduction of PVC ration cards to replace the old paper-based ones, with distribution starting on August 28.
During a state-level discussion with officials, ration dealers, and transport contractors, Minister Chowdhury revealed that 4.78 lakh PVC ration cards have been prepared in the first phase. These cards will be distributed by ration dealers in the presence of local public representatives to ensure transparency and efficiency in the process.
Tripura has made significant progress in PDS performance, ranking first in the North East and third or fourth in the country. The state has achieved an 81 percent success rate in e-KYC, with a target of reaching 100 percent to become a leader in the country. To further improve the system, 600 ration shops are being transformed into model ration shops and the commission for dealers under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana and Priority Group has been increased from Rs 143 to Rs 180.
Minister Chowdhury emphasized the importance of timely supply and quality maintenance of ration items, highlighting the government’s subsidy of Rs 25 per kilo on lentils and Rs 15 per kilo on sugar. Additionally, consumers will receive essentials like atta, flour, and semolina during the upcoming Durga festival.
Debapriya Bardhan, Special Secretary of the department, stressed the need for smooth and transparent operations in ration shops across the state. He mentioned that consumers can register complaints through the Mera Ration App and Anna Sahayati App to ensure accountability and efficiency.
The initiative to introduce PVC ration cards was officially launched with the distribution of cards to ration dealers and consumers by Minister Chowdhury and other dignitaries. With these new measures in place, the Tripura government aims to strengthen the PDS system and ensure better service delivery to the people.
