The Tripura state government’s decision to provide government jobs to 18 individuals whose family members were victims of political killings has been met with praise and appreciation. The move, announced by Tripura Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath, aims to address the long-standing issue of political violence in the state and provide support to affected families.
Nath explained that a dedicated committee was formed to examine applications from families of political murder victims. So far, 39 applications have been received and 18 candidates have been approved for employment. The committee, chaired by Nath, has been diligently reviewing applications and ensuring that all cases are thoroughly examined before making a decision.
According to Nath, political violence was rampant in Tripura before the BJP came to power in 2018, with many families unable to even lodge FIRs and case records going missing. He noted that most of the victims belonged to Congress families, who continued to face persecution even though the party had been out of power since 1993.
The recent meeting of the committee on June 19 reviewed eight fresh applications, with five being positively recommended for employment after scrutiny of administrative and police reports. Nath expressed confidence that these five individuals would also be absorbed into government jobs within a month or two, emphasizing that the BJP government has treated all families equally regardless of their political affiliation.
Tripura, a former stronghold of the CPI(M)-led Left Front, saw a shift in power to the BJP in 2018 after decades of rule by the Left Front. Nath highlighted that even BJP workers had been victims of political violence since 2017, underscoring the need for justice and support for all affected families.
The initiative to provide government jobs to individuals affected by political killings is being seen as a step towards addressing the legacy of political unrest in Tripura and providing much-needed support to families who have suffered for years. The state government’s efforts to bring justice and relief to these families have been lauded as a positive and inclusive approach to addressing the impact of political violence in the region.
