The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has intervened in the proposed inauguration of the redeveloped Maharaja Bir Bikram College Lake in Agartala under the Smart City Mission. The Commission has issued a recommendation to halt the inauguration due to ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the project.
The Forum for Protection of Environment and Waterbodies filed a petition in connection with Case No. 98/2025, raising objections against the announcement made by Agartala Smart City Limited to inaugurate the lake project on August 15, 2025, despite the matter being sub judice.
In response to the petition, the Chairperson of THRC, Justice Arindam Lodh, highlighted that the inauguration of the redeveloped MBB College Lake could potentially undermine the ongoing legal proceedings. The Commission received a petition alleging that the authority of Agartala Smart City Limited announced the inauguration date of the project on August 15, 2025, despite the pending legal dispute.
The Commission expressed concerns that the inauguration of the project could render the proceedings of the Commission ineffective and requested that appropriate authorities, including the Secretary of the Urban Development Department, the Secretary of the Revenue Department, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, the District Magistrate & Collector of West Tripura District, and the CEO of Agartala Smart City Limited, refrain from inaugurating or operationalizing any part of the project until the legal dispute is resolved.
The THRC emphasized that the inauguration of the redeveloped MBB College Lake could have adverse effects on the ongoing legal proceedings and recommended that authorities abstain from inaugurating or operating the project until further notice. The Commission’s intervention underscores the importance of upholding legal processes and ensuring that all parties involved adhere to due process in the development of projects such as the Maharaja Bir Bikram College Lake.
