The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken action following a complaint filed by the Forum for Protection of Environment and Water Bodies regarding ongoing drain construction in Agartala city. Notices have been issued to the state’s Urban Development Department, the Chief Executive Officer of Agartala Smart City Limited, and the Commissioner of the Agartala Municipal Corporation, directing them to submit their responses within seven days.
The complaint highlighted the disruptions caused by the slow pace of drain construction in Agartala, especially during the monsoon season. The construction activities have led to muddy and slippery roads, blocked stretches, and difficulty for pedestrians and vehicles to move through the city. Residents and commuters are facing severe inconvenience, with some unable to enter or exit their homes due to incomplete drainage work that has reportedly persisted for several months.
Furthermore, the complaint raised concerns about construction materials being left inside the drains, obstructing sewage flow and posing sanitation and safety risks. The Forum for Protection of Environment and Water Bodies urged the Commission to expedite the construction work, enforce safety and sanitation measures, and restore safe roads for public use.
In response to the complaint, the THRC has scheduled a hearing for August 12 and has directed the relevant authorities to submit their responses within seven days. The Commission emphasized the need to address the situation promptly, as it affects a large number of people in Agartala. It is crucial for the authorities to take necessary steps to ensure the timely completion of road and drain construction work for the welfare and safety of the city’s residents and commuters.
