News Report:
Agartala, Tripura: A protest rally and public meeting were organised by the Tripura Khet Mazdoor Union near the City Center area, demanding the withdrawal of the VBG Ramji Bill tabled in Parliament and opposing any move to dilute or replace the MGNREGA scheme.
Participants in the rally raised slogans asserting the importance of the rural employment guarantee programme and warned that scrapping or weakening MGNREGA would severely impact agricultural labourers and rural workers. The demonstrators called upon the central government to immediately withdraw the proposed bill and protect the livelihood rights of workers.
Addressing the gathering, Tripura Khet Mazdoor Union Secretary Shyamal De strongly criticised the proposed legislation, stating that MGNREGA remains a lifeline for millions of rural families. He said any attempt to dismantle the scheme would deepen unemployment and economic distress among marginalised sections of society.
The speakers urged the government to strengthen employment guarantee programmes instead of introducing policies that, they alleged, undermine workers’ rights. The programme concluded with a call for continued democratic movement to safeguard employment and social security for rural labourers.
