Tripura Leads Northeast’s Clean Energy Push with Landmark 800 MW Pumped Storage Project
Tripura is making significant strides towards energy independence with the launch of the Northeast’s first-ever 800 MW Pumped Storage Project. This milestone project marks a key achievement in the region’s clean energy journey and was recently highlighted during the 29th meeting of the North Eastern Region Power Committee (NERPC) held in Guwahati on Friday.
The meeting was attended by Ratan Lal Nath, Minister of Power, Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, and Election, Government of Tripura, who shared the state’s vision and initiatives in the energy sector. The Pumped Storage Project is a unique venture in the region that is expected to increase Tripura’s power capacity while supporting the national goal of integrating more renewable energy sources.
This project will play a crucial role in stabilizing the grid during peak demand periods, enhancing energy efficiency, and reducing the state’s reliance on fossil fuels. Minister Nath also highlighted Tripura’s efforts in protecting the interests of the Northeastern states by opposing a proposed increase in gas prices, ensuring continued affordability and stability in the power sector.
He emphasized that Tripura’s initiatives align with the broader national vision under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Tripura remains fully committed to the principles of clean energy, regional empowerment, and Atmanirbhar Bharat. Our goal is to build a resilient, self-reliant energy ecosystem that uplifts the entire Northeast,” the Minister added.
The NERPC meeting brought together ministers and senior officials from all Northeastern states to review energy policies, share progress on key infrastructure projects, and coordinate regional power planning. This collaborative effort aims to strengthen the region’s energy sector and promote sustainable development in the Northeast.
