Two individuals have been arrested by Tripura police for their alleged involvement in the attack on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in the Khowai district while they were listening to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mann Ki Baat radio programme. The arrest came shortly after Chief Minister Manik Saha demanded strong action against those responsible for the “shameful and undemocratic” act.
The attack resulted in at least seven BJP workers being injured, with three of them requiring admission to BGP Hospital in Agartala. Additionally, ten bikes belonging to BJP workers and two vehicles were set on fire by alleged Tipra Motha Party (TMP) supporters.
According to Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Khowai, Kudiarasu, two individuals have been arrested based on the FIR filed by BJP’s Mandal president of the Asharambari Assembly constituency in Khowai district, Jayanta Debbarma. Two more individuals have been brought in for questioning and all four will be produced before a local court seeking police remand for further interrogation.
In the FIR, Debbarma named 30 people accusing them of carrying out the attack on party workers. Chief Minister Saha has held BJP’s ally Tipra Motha Party (TMP) responsible for the attack and has directed the police to take strict action against the perpetrators.
“Strongly condemn the violent & undemocratic attack by TIPRA Motha party workers during Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi Ji’s #MannKiBaat programme at Asharambari,” Saha wrote in a Facebook post.
The police are continuing their investigation into the incident and are working to ensure that those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.
