An investigation has been launched by Tripura Police following reports of an indigenous woman being allegedly molested inside a bus in Bishramganj, Tripura’s Sepahijala district. The incident led to a group of demonstrators vandalizing the bus and other vehicles in protest.
In response to the incident, bus drivers have decided to halt their services indefinitely along the Agartala-Sonamura route, demanding a fair and transparent investigation into the matter.
According to Tripura Police sources, the tribal woman was traveling from Agartala to Master Para in Bishramganj when the assault occurred inside the bus. The woman was able to contact her relatives over the phone while still on the vehicle. Upon reaching Bishramganj, enraged family members and locals allegedly attacked and vandalized the bus, causing chaos in the area.
Senior police officials, including Inspector General (Law and Order) Manchak Ipper and Sepahijala Superintendent of Police Bijoy Debbarma, along with forces from Bishramganj and Bishalgarh Police Stations and Tripura State Rifles (TSR), rushed to the scene to control the situation. Section 163 of the BNSS has been enforced to manage the law and order situation.
“We are still working to identify the perpetrator. The situation is currently peaceful, and we are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident,” said a police officer who preferred to remain anonymous.
In response to the incident, Tipra Motha Party founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma expressed his concern, stating, “What happened in Bishramganj is alarming. This is not about Tribal/Non-Tribal but about a woman’s modesty being violated. The reaction of the mob is unacceptable. I have personally spoken to the victim and her mother, offering them support. I have also spoken to the DG, who has assured that the rule of law will be upheld. I appeal for peace, as violence only creates division among people.”
The investigation into the alleged molestation incident is ongoing, with authorities working to identify and apprehend the culprit. The community is urged to remain calm and allow the legal process to take its course.
