News Report:
Agartala, Tripura: Founded on December 28, 1885, the Indian National Congress completed 141 years on Sunday. In line with celebrations across the country, the 141st Foundation Day of the party was observed with due dignity in Tripura under the initiative of the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee.
The programme was held at the Tripura Pradesh Congress Bhavan in Agartala and was attended by former Pradesh Congress President and sitting MLA Gopal Chandra Roy, along with senior Congress leaders and party workers.
In view of the demise of the Hon’ble Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly Biswabandhu Sen, the Congress party decided to cancel the national flag hoisting programme on the day. Instead, the party flag was hoisted by MLA Gopal Chandra Roy. Floral tributes were paid to the founding leaders of the Indian National Congress, remembering their role in India’s freedom struggle.
Following the programme at the party office, Congress leaders and workers proceeded to Gandhi Ghat, where they offered tributes in remembrance of Mahatma Gandhi and other national leaders.
Speaking to the media, MLA Gopal Chandra Roy strongly criticised the policies of the central government. He also alleged that the Election Commission of India is functioning under the influence of the ruling dispensation at the Centre. Despite acknowledging the challenging condition of the Congress party in the state, he expressed hope that the party would regain its strength in Tripura politics in the coming days.
Leaders recalled that the Indian National Congress was formed to raise political awareness among the people of India, educate citizens about their rights and freedoms, and to oppose British colonial rule through peaceful, constitutional, and democratic means. They reaffirmed the party’s commitment to the ideals of democracy, secularism, and social justice.
