Tripura’s Employment and Manpower Planning Department has released data showing a consistent decline in the state’s unemployment rate over the past six years. According to officials, Tripura has consistently maintained an unemployment rate below the national average, as reported by the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) of the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, Government of India.
In 2018-19, Tripura’s unemployment rate was reported at 10 per cent, significantly higher than the national average of 5.8 per cent. However, the state has seen a steady decrease in unemployment rates since then, with the rate dropping to 3.2 per cent in 2019-20 and remaining the same in 2020-21. Subsequently, the rate decreased to 3 per cent in 2021-22, further declining to 1.4 per cent in 2022-23, and standing at 1.7 per cent in 2023-24. Throughout this period, the national average remained at 3.2 per cent.
Officials attribute this positive trend to the state government’s continuous efforts to create employment opportunities. Since 2018, a total of 19,810 individuals have secured government jobs through a transparent recruitment policy, with vacancies being filled gradually. The Joint Recruitment Board of Tripura (JRBT) was established to ensure fairness in recruitment, with 4,417 candidates appointed in Group-C and Group-D posts.
Additionally, the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC) has been conducting regular examinations to fill vacancies in various government departments, and the Teachers’ Recruitment Board recently invited applications for 700 graduate teacher positions. Recruitment processes for numerous other departments are also currently in progress.
In an effort to promote alternative employment generation, the state has organized 102 job fairs from 2018-19 to 2024-25 under the National Career Service (NCS) Scheme. These job fairs have resulted in 2,231 candidates securing employment in private organizations. The National Career Service Portal records show that 7,010 Class VIII-passed youths have registered for employment opportunities, emphasizing the state’s commitment to providing job opportunities for individuals with various educational qualifications.
The declining unemployment rates, coupled with recruitment drives and job fairs, indicate a positive trend in job opportunities within Tripura. The state government’s initiatives have played a significant role in creating employment opportunities and reducing unemployment rates, ultimately contributing to the overall development and prosperity of Tripura.
