Tripura’s healthcare sector has seen a remarkable transformation in recent years, with a significant decrease in the number of patients being referred outside the state for treatment. This positive development can be attributed to the advanced medical facilities now available at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GB Pant Hospital.
During a press conference held on August 24, Tripura Health Secretary Kiran Gitte highlighted the improvements in the state’s healthcare services under the leadership of Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha. Gitte mentioned that the number of patients being referred outside the state has decreased significantly, from nearly 2,000 patients per year in the past to around 690 in the current financial year.
The Health Secretary emphasized that the Chief Minister himself supports patients through the Mukhyamantri Samipeshu program, encouraging them to seek treatment within the state. He also mentioned that efforts have been made to bring in specialist gynecologists from outside the state to provide advanced treatment for gynecological diseases.
Currently, Tripura’s major hospitals, including GBP Hospital, IGM Hospital, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Hospital, have a combined capacity of about 2,200 beds and serve thousands of patients daily through their outpatient departments. AGMC and GBP Hospital offer multiple specialty and super-specialty services to cater to the healthcare needs of the population.
In order to strengthen the medical workforce, the state government recently recruited 45 specialist doctors through the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC). Additionally, plans are underway to introduce a 200-bed mother and child hospital and eight new medical services and courses to further enhance healthcare facilities in the state.
The press conference was attended by senior medical professionals, including Medical Superintendents from various hospitals and specialists in fields such as cardiology, surgery, neurology, and gynecology. The collective effort of these healthcare professionals and the state government aims to ensure that all major surgical facilities are available within Tripura, reducing the need for patients to seek treatment outside the state.
