Officials in Tripura’s Unakoti district have launched a groundbreaking initiative to enhance grassroots governance by ensuring the benefits of central and state schemes reach every household in the region. Under this unique programme, each government official will adopt a gram panchayat or village committee, creating a direct channel of communication and accountability between the district administration and rural communities.
Led by Unakoti District Magistrate Tamal Majumder, the voluntary programme aims to bridge the gap between officials and villagers without providing any additional remuneration. The 92 gram panchayats and village committees in the district will each be assigned to an officer who will visit the location after office hours to listen to people’s issues and take immediate steps for resolution.
To facilitate this initiative, an online system is being developed to link all departments and enable real-time updates from the field with a single click. Majumder highlighted the importance of the feedback mechanism, citing an instance where an officer discovered villages lacking proper road connectivity during a visit.
In addition to addressing infrastructure issues, the programme places a strong emphasis on inclusive development, particularly for women and children. The district administration is committed to ensuring that all eligible villagers benefit from schemes related to housing, clean drinking water, education, and healthcare.
A quarterly review mechanism has been established to evaluate progress and challenges faced during implementation. Majumder expressed optimism that the initiative would strengthen emotional bonds and deepen understanding of rural communities’ aspirations.
The district administration is hopeful that this approach could serve as a model for grassroots governance not only in Tripura but also across the state. This innovative programme is set to bring positive changes and improve the lives of villagers in Unakoti district.
