US President Donald Trump reportedly urged the EU to impose 100% tariffs on India and China to pressure Putin into ending the Ukraine war, citing closer Russia-China-India ties and stalled peace efforts.

In a dramatic escalation of trade and geopolitical tensions, US President Donald Trump has reportedly asked the European Union to impose tariffs of up to 100% on imports from India and China. The move is aimed at forcing Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine, according to reports from the Financial Times, BBC, and Bloomberg.
The proposal came during a high-level meeting between US and EU officials in Washington on Tuesday, where strategies to intensify economic pressure on Russia were discussed.
A senior US official was quoted as saying:
“We’re ready to go, ready to go right now, but we are only going to do this if our European partners step up with us.”
The development follows Putin’s deepening ties with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, showcased at a recent summit in China. Last month, the US had already raised tariffs on Indian imports to 50% in response to India’s purchases of Russian oil.
Trump’s move underscores his growing frustration over stalled peace efforts, including a failed summit with Putin in Alaska and Russia’s largest-ever drone attacks on Ukraine last week.
EU sanctions chief David O’Sullivan led the European delegation, alongside senior US Treasury officials, to explore coordinated measures. Trump also hinted at ongoing trade negotiations with India, calling Modi “a very good friend” and expressing optimism about upcoming talks.
