Agartala, Tripura (Tuesday):
In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the East Agartala Police arrested two individuals — one man and one woman — from Jogendranagar Railway Station on Monday evening for possessing 35 kilograms of cannabis (ganja).
The duo was apprehended by alert railway and police personnel and later taken to the East Police Station for interrogation and legal processing.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, SDPO (East) Debaprasad Deb confirmed the seizure and provided further details about the operation. “Based on actionable intelligence, our team intercepted the suspects at the railway station and found 35 kg of ganja in their possession. The estimated black market value of the seized contraband is around Rs.3 lakh,” he said.
In addition to the cannabis, police also recovered:
- Rs.3,000 in cash
- Two mobile phones are now being examined for potential leads and contacts related to drug peddling networks.
The SDPO also mentioned that further investigation is underway to determine the source and destination of the drug consignment, as well as the larger network possibly involved in narcotics trafficking across the northeastern corridor.
This arrest adds to the increasing number of drug-related cases in Tripura, prompting law enforcement agencies to intensify vigilance across railway routes and border areas.
The accused are expected to be produced in court soon under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
