News Report:
Agartala, Tripura: Alleging that the Modi-led central government is erasing the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi by removing his identity from Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), the Tripura Pradesh Unorganised Workers Congress organised a protest demonstration in the state.
Addressing the protest, leaders of the organisation claimed that the move amounts to a dual attack—both on Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy and on the rights of workers, especially rural and unorganised labourers who depend on MNREGA for livelihood security. They accused the Narendra Modi government of weakening labour rights and diluting welfare schemes meant for the poor.
The protesters demanded the restoration of Gandhi’s name and principles in MNREGA and urged the central government to protect workers’ rights instead of undermining social welfare programmes. Slogans were raised against the policy changes, and the demonstration was held peacefully.
Leaders warned that if the government continues to ignore the concerns of workers, the movement would be intensified in the coming days.
