Fish farmers in West Tripura district have received a much-needed boost with Rs 1.2 crore in financial assistance as part of the state government’s ongoing flood relief efforts for the aquaculture sector. The distribution ceremony, which took place at Muktadhara under the Department of Fisheries, signifies the latest installment of a Rs 17 crore relief package that has been sanctioned for farmers who have suffered losses due to floods.
State Minister Sudhangshu Das expressed the government’s commitment to supporting fish farmers who have faced devastating losses. “Many fish farmers have suffered huge losses due to floods over the years. We supported them last year and are continuing that support this year,” Das told reporters.
The financial aid is targeted towards farmers whose ponds and fish cultivation operations have been damaged during recurring seasonal flooding in the region. Officials highlighted the challenges that natural disasters pose to local aquaculture, which plays a crucial role in meeting Tripura’s high fish consumption needs.
Tripura boasts one of the highest per capita fish consumption rates in India, creating a strong market demand that officials aim to sustain through farmer support programs. The state government is actively encouraging more residents to enter fish farming to meet the growing consumption requirements.
In addition to providing immediate financial relief, the program aims to maintain farmer confidence in aquaculture ventures despite the risks posed by floods. Officials emphasized their commitment to supporting the sector’s recovery and expansion efforts.
The remaining Rs 15.8 crore from the sanctioned relief package will be distributed in subsequent phases to eligible farmers across the district. This financial assistance is expected to provide a crucial lifeline to fish farmers as they work towards rebuilding their businesses and livelihoods in the aftermath of the floods.
