World Fisheries Day was observed today at the Muktadhara Hall in Agartala with much significance and public participation. The event highlighted the vital role of the fisheries sector in ensuring livelihoods, nutrition, and economic development in Tripura.
The program was graced by Sudhanshu Das, Minister of Fisheries, who attended as the Chief Guest. MLA Meena Rani Sarkar was also present as a special guest, along with senior officials from the fisheries department, experts, local entrepreneurs, and members of various self-help groups.
In his address, Minister Sudhanshu Das emphasized the importance of strengthening fish production through modern aquaculture methods, training facilities, and government-led financial assistance schemes. He encouraged local youth and women entrepreneurs to take up fish farming as a sustainable and profitable livelihood opportunity.
MLA Meena Rani Sarkar praised the fisheries department for promoting community-based fishery initiatives and highlighted the increasing participation of women in small-scale fish farming, cooperative ventures, and retail fish businesses.
During the program, several successful fish farmers and cooperatives were felicitated for their contributions to the sector. An exhibition showcasing local fish species, innovative farming techniques, and modern equipment drew keen interest from visitors.
Speakers also stressed the need to protect water bodies, maintain environmental balance, and adopt sustainable fishing practices to preserve aquatic biodiversity.
World Fisheries Day is observed globally each year to recognize the importance of the fisheries sector in food security, livelihood generation, and ecological preservation. Today’s celebration in Agartala reflected the state’s commitment to promoting sustainable fishery development and empowering farming communities.
