In a shocking turn of events, a young Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, Dhiman Chakma, originally from Tripura, was apprehended by the Odisha Vigilance Department for accepting a bribe of Rs. 10 lakh from a businessman. The incident, which took place in Dharamgarh, Kalahandi district, has raised serious concerns about the prevalence of corruption within the bureaucracy.
Chakma, a 2021 batch IAS officer and former Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer, was serving as the Sub-Collector of Dharamgarh at the time of his arrest. It was reported that he had threatened the businessman with punitive action against his stone crusher unit unless the bribe was paid. The businessman, left with no choice, approached the Vigilance department, leading to Chakma’s arrest.
Following his apprehension, a raid was conducted at Chakma’s official residence, where an additional Rs. 47 lakh in unaccounted cash was seized. This discovery has sparked further investigations into the extent of corruption involving the young officer.
Chakma, the son of a former school teacher, has shocked many in administrative circles with his involvement in bribery. He is currently in police custody and undergoing interrogation, with a case registered against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
