Tripura Congress MLA and former minister Sudip Roy Barman caused a stir in the political scene on Thursday when he declared that the ruling BJP leaders and Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma still have “Congress DNA.” This assertion came after an unexpected gesture from Pradyot, the former state Congress chief and royal descendant of Tripura.
On Wednesday, Pradyot returned a sack full of Congress flags to the party’s headquarters in Agartala, flags that had been in his possession since his time as state party president. Roy Barman recounted, “Pradyot informed me that when he was the Tripura Congress president, the AICC had provided some party flags which were still with him. I asked him to return them to me. Yesterday, he arrived with a full sack of Congress flags for us to use.”
Roy Barman emphasized that Pradyot’s association with the Congress runs deep, and suggested that many BJP leaders also have connections to the party. “Pradyot’s DNA is Congress, and the majority of BJP leaders also have Congress DNA. They still have a soft spot for the Congress,” he claimed.
Furthermore, Roy Barman criticized the current hostile political atmosphere in the state, advocating for a return to civility in political discourse. “Just because we are in politics doesn’t mean we cannot visit each other’s homes. This culture of hostility began after the BJP came to power. We must break this toxic political culture,” he urged.
The remarks from Roy Barman have brought attention to the complex political landscape in Tripura, where alliances and affiliations often blur party lines. As the state continues to navigate its political future, the statements made by the Congress MLA have sparked discussions about the enduring influence of the Congress party in the region.
