AGARTALA: In a highly startling turn of events within the state’s socio-political circles, leaders of the nationalist trade union, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), have openly raised allegations of widespread extortion operating in the capital city. Moving to protect their organizational reputation, the top leadership of the BMS West Tripura District Committee met with the Director General of Police (DGP) at the Police Headquarters today to lodge an official complaint and demand immediate punitive action.
The development has sent shockwaves through the local administration, as a premier nationalist labor front has publicly knocked on the top cop’s door to counter criminal activities happening under the guise of trade unionism.
The Mechanics of the Fraud
According to the written memorandum submitted to the DGP, a well-organized syndicate of miscreants and fraudulent elements has been systematically exploiting the political capital of the ruling ecosystem.
Key Grievances Highlighted by BMS:
- Illegal Branding: The fraudsters are reportedly designing fake letterheads, identity cards, and receipts explicitly using the official name and registered logo of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh.
- Targeted Extortion: Armed with this counterfeit branding, these elements have been running aggressive extortion (Tolabaji) rackets targeting local businessmen, construction contractors, transport operators, and small-scale traders across the West Tripura district.
- Coercion and Intimidation: Victims are often threatened with forced work disruptions or physical intimidation if they refuse to pay the illegal “levies” demanded by these imposter groups.
“We Will Not Allow Our Name to Be Tarnished”: BMS Leadership
Speaking to reporters outside the Police Headquarters after their high-profile meeting with the DGP, senior BMS district representatives made it clear that the organization maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy toward financial irregularities.
”A few anti-social elements, who have absolutely no formal connection with our nationalist ideology, are trying to use the formidable name of BMS as a shield to run their personal extortion shops. This is completely unacceptable. It ruins the clean image of our labor front and creates panic among the trading community. We have handed over specific inputs and names to the Director General of Police today and requested him to deal with these criminals with an iron hand, irrespective of who they claim to know,” a senior BMS leader stated emphatically.
DGP Assures Prompt Crackdown
The delegation stated that the Director General of Police listened to their grievances with utmost seriousness and examined the evidence presented regarding the unauthorized collection of funds. The DGP reportedly issued immediate directives to the Superintendent of Police (SP) West and all local police station inspectors to track down anyone found demanding money under the banner of labor unions without valid legal authorization.
Following the submission, the BMS has also issued a public advisory asking local commercial establishments and contractors to immediately notify the nearest police station or official BMS offices if any individual approaches them demanding funds using the union’s name.
