Newborn Baby Dies at ARJM Hospital in Kalashahar Due to Negligence in Health Care System
In a tragic incident at ARJM Hospital in Kalashahar, Unakoti district of Tripura, a newborn baby recently lost its life due to the inhumane and broken state of the state’s healthcare services once again coming to light.
On July 11th, Bulbuli Debnath, a pregnant woman from the village of Chhantail, was admitted to ARJM Hospital. Despite being given medication by Dr. Chiranjib Deb and starting preparations for delivery when her water broke at night, she did not experience labor pains, leading nurses to repeatedly call out to Ferdousi Begum and Pinki Saha, who were sleeping behind closed doors at the time.
Seeing the urgency of the situation, GD worker Kakali Malakar called the family to come and took the initiative to assist in the delivery. Despite the use of excessive forceps, the baby was born at five in the morning, but was lifeless. When duty doctor Dipayan Pal was called to see the baby and its mother, he advised to immediately take the child to any private hospital’s ICU. However, even after being taken to an ICU at a private hospital in Kalashahar, the child could not be saved.
Even after this incident, the authorities at ARJM Hospital refused to accept responsibility and instead held a meeting to divert attention from the issue. The doctor stated that no one had called them, and the nurses claimed they were unaware of anything, as if the death due to negligence was the final reality here.
The baby’s mother, Bulbuli Debnath, is demanding intervention from the Chief Minister.
According to sources, following the incident, pregnant patients are now being sent to district hospitals instead of being admitted to the district hospital, causing concern among the general public – is this the future of the state’s healthcare system? The question remains – who will be held accountable for this death?
