The Tipra Motha Party (TMP) leader Umasankar Debbarma has raised concerns about illegal infiltration and the presence of Bangladeshis in Tripura, particularly in the Sepahijala district. On July 18, Debbarma demanded that the police detect and deport more than 100 Bangladeshis who are allegedly staying illegally in eight Village Committees (VCs) under Bishalgarh and Sonamura subdivision of the district.
As a member of the District Council (MDC) of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), Debbarma met with Superintendent of Police (SP) Bijoy Debbarma to discuss the issue and handed over a memorandum outlining the locations where the Bangladeshis are living. The SP has assured that he will take up the matter with District Magistrate (DM) Siddhartha Jaiswal and the Forests authority to address the alleged presence of Bangladeshis.
The TMP, which is an ally of the BJP-led coalition government in Tripura, has been actively campaigning against illegal infiltration. TMP leader David Debbarma is currently on a 2,500-km-long ‘Delhi cholgo abhiyan’ (march) to draw attention to the infiltration problem in the border state. Additionally, Party MLA Ranjit Debbarma has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking his intervention to prevent further infiltration from across the border.
The issue of illegal infiltration and the presence of Bangladeshis in Tripura remains a significant concern for the TMP and other political parties in the region. The demand to detect and deport illegal immigrants underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the state in maintaining border security and protecting the interests of its residents.
