The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken action in response to serious allegations of coercion and threats made by officers of the West Agartala Women Police Station. The commission has directed the Director General of Police (DGP), Anurag, to submit a detailed report by August 26 regarding the complaint filed by Ratna Rani Kar, a resident of Agartala.
According to the complaint, Ratna Rani Kar and her family were allegedly threatened by the Officer-in-Charge of the police station in connection with a personal dispute involving her son, Biplab Kar. The dispute stemmed from Biplab’s relationship with a woman named Tanu Sutradhar, which led to their marriage in December 2024. However, post-marriage, it was revealed that Tanu had been married twice before and had three children from her previous marriages. It was also claimed that Tanu had undergone sterilization, making it impossible for her to conceive, despite initially claiming pregnancy during her relationship with Biplab.
As the relationship between Biplab and Tanu deteriorated, Tanu reportedly lodged a case against Biplab at the West Agartala Women Police Station. When Biplab and his parents visited the station in response to the summons, the Officer-in-Charge allegedly threatened them with filing a rape case against Biplab if he did not accept Tanu as his wife, potentially leading to a 20-year prison sentence.
The complaint further alleged that the officer dismissed concerns over Tanu’s marital history, claiming that it was not illegal for a woman to marry multiple times. The THRC, after reviewing the complaint, noted that the allegations raised concerns about the human rights of Biplab Kar and his parents.
The Commission has requested a comprehensive report from the DGP by August 26 to clarify the situation and investigate any potential misconduct or abuse of authority in the handling of the case. The THRC’s directive aims to ensure that justice is served and human rights are protected in this matter.
