Tripura Emerging as a Major Force in India’s Startup Landscape
Tripura is quickly establishing itself as a significant player in India’s startup ecosystem, showcasing an impressive 66 per cent average growth in startup recognitions over the past five years. The state’s progress was recently highlighted at the Tamil Nadu Global Startup Summit 2025, held at the CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex in Coimbatore. During the summit, over Rs 100 crore in investment commitments were announced, demonstrating the growing momentum of innovation in India.
The event attracted more than 71,000 visitors and over 20 global startup stakeholders, providing a platform for investors, entrepreneurs, and policymakers to collaborate on shaping India’s entrepreneurial future. Organized by StartupTN, the summit showcased Tripura’s rapid evolution into a regional leader in innovation and entrepreneurship.
Jeya Ragul Geshan B, IFS, Director of IT for the Government of Tripura, delivered a keynote address at the summit, emphasizing the state’s commitment to playing a strategic role in India’s innovation-led growth story. He highlighted Tripura’s goal of creating an “Unnato and Shreshtho Tripura,” where entrepreneurship serves as a tool for inclusive prosperity.
Geshan mentioned that Tripura leads in two key areas according to the Startup India report _Prabhaav: Startup India 9-Year Factbook (December 2024) – top-performing Tier 2/3 districts and the highest number of women-led startups in the Northeast. These achievements showcase Tripura’s dedication to transforming intent into impact through consistency, clarity, and collaboration.
As one of the first Northeastern states to introduce a Startup Policy in 2019, Tripura has laid the groundwork for sustained entrepreneurial growth. Recognized as a Category B – Leader in the Startup India State Ranking 2022, the state recently launched the Tripura Startup Policy 2024, supported by a Rs 50 crore fund for entrepreneurs. This new policy offers grants for student startups, incubators, and patent support to foster innovation.
Currently, Tripura is home to over 80 recognized startups and eight active incubators, including the ISRO-supported Space Tech Incubation Centre at NIT Agartala and the Tripura University Business Incubator. These institutions form a robust ecosystem that supports entrepreneurs at every stage of their journey, from idea to scale.
Geshan emphasized Tripura’s focus on blending IT with entrepreneurship to empower every district with digital tools, startup resources, and market access. He highlighted that innovation does not need to be confined to metro areas but should be mission-driven and accessible to all corners of the country.
With ongoing policy support and increasing investor confidence, Tripura is positioning itself as a model for how smaller states can drive innovation, inclusion, and economic transformation in India’s startup landscape. The state’s continuous efforts to build momentum, enhance capacity, and drive progress demonstrate that innovation knows no boundaries and can thrive in any part of the country.
