Tripura’s GB Pant Hospital, located in Agartala, recently made history by successfully performing the state’s first heart-muscle reduction procedure. This groundbreaking surgery, known as Percutaneous Transluminal Septal Myocardial Ablation, was carried out on a 46-year-old patient suffering from Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy, a condition that causes the heart muscle to become abnormally thick and obstruct blood flow.
The medical team at Agartala Government Medical College and GB Pant Hospital injected a controlled amount of alcohol into a specific artery to reduce the thickened heart tissue, providing relief to the patient who had been experiencing severe chest pain for a long time. The patient is now recovering well and showing significant improvement, marking a major milestone in cardiac care in Tripura.
According to health officials, individuals with this genetic condition are often undiagnosed, putting them at risk of heart failure and sudden cardiac events. The Percutaneous Transluminal Septal Myocardial Ablation procedure directly targets the obstructing muscle and is considered one of the most effective treatment options for eligible patients.
Previously, residents of Tripura in need of this specialized treatment had to seek medical care outside the state, causing additional financial burden on families. With the successful completion of this procedure, the Agartala hospital now joins a select group of centers in eastern India with the capacity to perform such advanced cardiac interventions, bringing much-needed relief to patients in the region.
The team of medical professionals behind this achievement includes Dr. Anindya Sundar Trivedi, Assistant Professor and Consultant Cardiologist, Dr. Rakesh Das, Consultant Cardiologist, Dr. Manna Bhattacharya, Junior Doctor, Dr. Arghya Pratim Nath, Dr. Anvesha Debnath, Dr. Supratim Acharya, Dr. Bulti Namah Das, and Dr. Angela Debbarma. Their expertise and dedication have been instrumental in advancing cardiac care in Tripura and providing hope to patients in need of specialized treatment. The procedure was conducted free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, making it accessible to all eligible patients.
