AGARTALA: In a chilling reminder of the growing public hazards posed by unscientific civic construction under the Smart City project, a highly respected former school teacher, Manoj Roy, narrowly escaped death today. The senior citizen suffered serious injuries after falling directly into an open drain structural grid in the capital city.
The shocking accident occurred early Saturday morning on Ramnagar Road No. 2, right next to the Banividyapeeth School—an institution founded by Mr. Roy himself. The veteran educator was on his way to tend to the school’s flower gardens when the fragile, outdated bamboo structure used to loosely cover the open municipal drain suddenly snapped under his weight, plunging him into the pit.
A Horrific Close Call with Exposed Iron Rods
The accident quickly turned horrific as Mr. Roy fell onto exposed structural iron reinforcement rods (TMT bars) left uncovered inside the unscientific drain layout. One of the sharp iron rods pierced directly into his chest area.
The Rescue and Medical Timeline:
- Immediate Local Rescue: Hearing his cries, three active members of a local Agartala club rushed to the spot, carefully pulled him out of the drain cavity, and immediately transported him to the IGM Hospital Emergency Wing.
- Emergency Surgical Intervention: Doctors at the IGM Hospital’s Emergency Surgery Department treated the deep puncture wound on his chest immediately.
- Miraculous Escape: Following thorough clinical evaluation and primary stitches, medical officers confirmed that the iron rod had fortunately missed vital internal organs. As the internal trauma was deemed non-fatal, he was discharged with a strict prescription for absolute home rest.
“Dozens of Smarts City Drain Casualties Arriving Weekly”: IGM Hospital Doctors
The medical staff on duty at the IGM Hospital dropped a bombshell revelation while briefing the media on the former teacher’s condition, stating that Mr. Roy’s case is far from an isolated incident.
”We are treating patients with similar severe lacerations, broken bones, and puncture wounds almost every single week. Citizens are constantly arriving at our emergency bays after falling through broken, incomplete, or unscientifically covered Smart City drains across Agartala.
Manoj Babu is extraordinarily lucky to be alive today; if that exposed iron rod had pierced just a few centimeters deeper or shifted slightly toward the left, it would have punctured his heart or lungs, resulting in instant on-spot fatality. The municipal corporation must treat this as a final warning,” a senior attending surgeon at IGM Hospital cautioned on condition of anonymity.
Public Rage Explodes Against Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC)
The news of the beloved teacher’s injury has sparked intense anger among the residents of Ramnagar and the broader Agartala civic circles. Furious locals pointed out that the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has turned the city’s footpaths into “death traps” by leaving massive drainage stretches completely uncovered or poorly patched with rotting bamboo poles and loose concrete slabs.
Local citizen groups have issued a stern ultimatum to the urban development authorities, warning that if the AMC does not immediately execute a comprehensive safety audit, cover all exposed iron rods, and seal the open drains across Ramnagar within the next 48 hours, they will launch a massive civil disobedience blockade at the municipal headquarters.
