A dramatic incident unfolded at Hapania’s Ashwini Market area after an attempted theft allegedly led to vigilante action by locals. According to police sources, Tanmoy Malakar visited the residence of his uncle, Debashish Deb, accompanied by his two friends — Masum Mia and Madhurima Debnath.
Locals allege that Masum Mia and Madhurima Debnath, both accused of substance abuse, attempted to commit theft inside Debashish Deb’s home. Once the incident came to light, residents of the locality, along with Debashish, reportedly tied up the two accused and cut their hair as punishment.
Following the ordeal, Madhurima Debnath filed a complaint at the Amtali Police Station. Acting on the FIR, police detained Debashish Deb for his involvement in the vigilante assault. Amtali Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Paritosh Das, confirmed that Debashish will be produced before the court. He added that other individuals involved in the assault will also be apprehended based on the investigation.
Police reminded citizens that taking the law into one’s own hands is a punishable offence, even in cases of alleged theft, and urged the public to report such incidents to authorities instead of resorting to violence.
