Tension surfaced along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Kailashahar after Bangladesh’s Border Guard (BGB) allegedly stopped road development work near the international boundary. The incident took place in Ward No. 9 of the Kailashahar Municipal Council area, close to the Manu Land Customs Station, where brick soling work on an old road near a cremation ground along the Manu River had begun. Local sources said BGB personnel objected to the work, claiming that border regulations prohibit any construction activity within 150 yards of the international border.Following the objection, the contractor was forced to suspend the work and withdraw labourers from the site, bringing the project to a complete halt. The stoppage has caused serious inconvenience to local residents, particularly families taking bodies to the cremation ground for last rites.Contractor Abdul Mannan said the work, which had remained stalled for a long time, was resumed on the administration’s instructions but had to be stopped again due to the BGB’s objection. He added that the matter has been reported to the authorities. The incident has led to a situation of simmering tension in the border area, with the administration and the Border Security Force closely monitoring developments.
