AGARTALA: In a spirited show of strength, the Tripura Karmachari Samanway Committee (H.B. Road) organized a massive protest rally today in the capital city. The demonstration was held to mobilize state government employees and teachers for the upcoming Nationwide General Strike scheduled for February 12, 2026, called by various central trade unions and national federations.
March for Employees’ Rights
The rally, which saw participation from hundreds of employees across various government departments, wound through the major thoroughfares of Agartala. Carrying banners and shouting slogans against “anti-worker policies,” the protestors emphasized that the strike is a necessary step to protect the dignity and rights of the working class.
Addressing the gathering at the end of the rally, the leaders of the Samanway Committee highlighted that the current economic landscape and policy changes have pushed government employees into a state of uncertainty.
Key Demands & Grievances:
The Committee outlined several critical reasons for supporting the February 12 strike:
- Repeal of Labor Codes: The leaders demanded the immediate withdrawal of the four new Labor Codes, which they claim favor corporate interests over worker safety and job security.
- Regularization of Contractual Workers: A long-standing demand for the regularization of fixed-pay and contractual employees who have served for years was reiterated.
- DA and Pension Issues: The rally called for the release of pending Dearness Allowance (DA) installments and voiced strong opposition to the New Pension Scheme (NPS), demanding a return to the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
- Restoration of MGNREGA: In solidarity with rural workers, the committee also demanded the full restoration and strengthening of the MGNREGA scheme.
Government’s Counter-Directive
It is significant to note that the protest comes despite a strict memorandum issued by the General Administration (AR) Department of the Government of Tripura. The state government has directed all offices and undertakings to function normally on February 12, warning of disciplinary action against employees who remain absent.
However, the Samanway Committee leadership remained undeterred. “The strike is a democratic right. We are not just fighting for ourselves but for the future of public services in India,” a senior member of the committee stated.
Widespread Support
The call for the February 12 strike has gained significant momentum in Tripura, receiving “moral support” from the Pradesh Congress and active backing from the CITU and other Left-leaning organizations. While the state administration prepares to maintain order and attendance, the Samanway Committee’s rally today proved that a significant section of the workforce is prepared for a showdown.
