A pall of gloom descended over the Maylakhala area following a horrific road accident on the main road today, which claimed the life of a young man on the spot. The deceased has been identified as Deepak Deb, son of the late Dinesh Deb.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred when a speeding Tipper truck (Registration No. TR01BB1810) broadsided Deepak, who was traveling on his bicycle. The impact was so severe that the youth died instantly before any medical aid could be provided.
Angry Locals Intervene
Immediately after the collision, local residents rushed to the scene and managed to intercept the vehicle. The driver was detained by the crowd and later handed over to the police.
Tensions flared as community members raised serious allegations against the driver. Many claimed that the driver appeared to be in a heavily intoxicated state and had reportedly been driving throughout the night without rest, leading to the fatal lapse in judgment.
Corporator Visits the Spot
Upon receiving news of the tragedy, local Corporator Pradip Chandra rushed to the accident site to console the bereaved family and pacify the agitated locals. He took stock of the situation and assured the residents that he would coordinate with the police to ensure a thorough investigation and strict legal action against the driver.
Demand for Safety Measures
The frequent movement of heavy tipper trucks on the narrow main roads has long been a concern for the residents of Maylakhala. Following today’s incident, the community has renewed its demand for:
- Stricter Traffic Monitoring: Checking for drunk driving and overspeeding, especially during early morning hours.
- Vehicle Restrictions: Regulating the timing of heavy vehicle movement in residential and high-traffic zones.
- Justice for Deepak: Ensuring the family receives adequate compensation and that the perpetrator faces the full force of the law.
The body of the deceased has been shifted to the morgue for a post-mortem examination, and a case has been registered at the local police station.
