The Journalists Development Union of Tripura (JDUT) has expressed severe outrage and strong condemnation following a brutal attack on the residence of working journalist Sukanta Bhowmik late Tuesday night. The incident occurred in the Nobogram area, under the jurisdiction of the Airport Police Station, where miscreants reportedly targeted the journalist’s home in a violent assault.
The union has termed the attack as a direct blow to the freedom of the press and the safety of democratic pillars in the state.
JDUT Delegation Visits Victim’s Residence
On Thursday, a high-level delegation from the JDUT visited Sukanta Bhowmik’s home to gather first-hand information about the incident. During the visit, the representatives interacted with the family members, who are reportedly in a state of deep shock and trauma. The union assured Bhowmik of their full support and committed to fighting for justice.
Demands Placed Before Airport Police Station
Following the visit, the JDUT representatives met with the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Airport Police Station to register their formal protest.
The union’s primary demands include:
- Swift Identification & Arrest: The immediate identification and arrest of all individuals involved in the midnight attack.
- Stringent Legal Action: Ensuring that the perpetrators are booked under non-bailable sections of the law to serve as a deterrent.
- Protection for Journalists: A formal request to the state government to strengthen the security framework for working journalists across Tripura.
Police Assurance
The Officer-in-Charge of the Airport PS assured the delegation that a thorough investigation is underway. The police stated that they are scanning available evidence and have intensified patrolling in the Nobogram area to prevent any further escalation or threats to the journalist.
Warning of State-Wide Agitation
In a strong statement, the JDUT leadership asserted that they would not remain silent spectators to the rising trend of intimidation against media professionals.
”Attacking a journalist at their home is a cowardly act intended to muzzle the truth. If the culprits are not arrested immediately, the Journalists Development Union of Tripura will be forced to launch a massive state-wide movement to protect the dignity and safety of the fourth estate,” a JDUT spokesperson stated.
The union has also appealed to the Chief Minister, Dr. Manik Saha, to intervene personally and ensure that journalists can perform their duties without fear of violence or harassment.
