In a unique and inspiring initiative to mark Police Week, the West Agartala Police Station witnessed a symbolic change in leadership today. Srijaya Bhowmik, an eighth-grade student from the capital’s Shishu Bihar Higher Secondary School, took on the role of the Officer-in-Charge (OC) for a day. Joining her in this leadership exercise was Sabasree Chakraborty, who performed the duties of the Second Officer.
The initiative aims to bridge the gap between the police and the youth, fostering a sense of civic responsibility and offering students a firsthand look at law enforcement and public service.
A Day in the Life of a Police Officer
The “student officers” were welcomed with a formal salute by the regular staff of the West Police Station. Throughout the day, Srijaya and Sabasree were briefed on various aspects of policing, including:
- Duty Management: Understanding how police personnel are deployed across the city for patrolling and traffic management.
- Grievance Redressal: Observing how citizens’ complaints are registered and how the police interact with the public.
- Technology in Policing: Learning about the use of CCTV surveillance and the emergency response system.
The Experience of the ‘Young OC’
Sitting in the OC’s chair, Srijaya Bhowmik expressed her excitement and pride.
”It feels incredible to see the hard work that goes into keeping our city safe. I used to feel a bit intimidated by the police, but after today, I realize they are our biggest helpers. This experience has motivated me to think about a career in public service,” Srijaya shared.
Sabasree Chakraborty, acting as the Second Officer, added that the experience taught them the importance of discipline and staying calm under pressure.
Fostering Police-Public Relations
Senior officials of the West Tripura District Police noted that such programs are vital for “Police Week” celebrations. By involving school students, the department hopes to:
- Humanize the Force: Show the community the approachable and supportive side of the police.
- Career Guidance: Encourage bright young minds to consider joining the police force in the future.
- Awareness: Educate students about their rights and the legal system.
The regular Officer-in-Charge and other senior personnel guided the students throughout the session, ensuring they understood the weight of the uniform and the responsibilities it carries. The day concluded with the students being presented with mementos for their enthusiastic participation in the “Student Police” initiative.
