AGARTALA: The working-class movement in Tripura lost one of its most prominent voices today with the passing of Amal Chatterjee, a veteran leader and former top official of the Tripura Rajya Karmachari Samannay Committee (HB Road). A long-standing member of the CPI(M), Chatterjee was a towering figure in the state’s trade union history, known for his relentless advocacy for the rights of government employees.
His mortal remains were brought to the CPI(M) State Headquarters at Melarmath this afternoon, where party leaders, colleagues, and supporters gathered in large numbers to pay their final respects.
A Legacy of Struggle and Service
Amal Chatterjee’s career spanned several decades, during which he became synonymous with the Employees’ Coordination Committee. He played a pivotal role in organizing the state’s workforce and was instrumental in various movements regarding pay commissions, job security, and democratic rights for employees.
Key Contributions:
- Leadership at HB Road: As a senior leader of the Coordination Committee, he led numerous historic agitations to safeguard the interests of state government employees.
- Ideological Stalwart: Even after his formal retirement from service, he remained an active mentor to young labor activists within the CPI(M) fold.
- Social Advocacy: Beyond employee issues, he was a vocal participant in broader social and democratic movements across the state.
Last Respects at Melarmath
The atmosphere at the CPI(M) state office was somber as the red flag was draped over his casket. Senior party leaders, including the State Secretary and former ministers, placed floral wreaths and offered the “Red Salute” to their departed comrade.
In Attendance:
- Senior CPI(M) State Committee members.
- Representatives from the CITU and other frontal organizations.
- A vast number of former and current government employees who worked under his leadership.
“An Irreparable Loss”: Party Statement
In a condolence message, the CPI(M) State Committee described Chatterjee’s death as a significant blow to the democratic movement in Tripura.
”Comrade Amal Chatterjee was a dedicated soldier of the working class. His deep understanding of employee grievances and his ability to unite the workforce were extraordinary. His absence will be deeply felt in every future struggle for workers’ rights,” the party stated.
Funeral Rites
Following the tribute at the party office, a funeral procession was taken out through the streets of Agartala. His last rites are scheduled to be performed later today at the Battala Crematorium with full honors from his organizational colleagues.
Amal Chatterjee is survived by his family and a vast legacy of organized labor movements that continue to shape the socio-political landscape of Tripura.
