AGARTALA: Marking the “Triple Blessed” occasion of the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana of Lord Buddha, the 2570th Buddha Jayanti was celebrated today with deep religious fervor at the Venuvan Buddha Vihar in Kunjaban, Agartala. Despite the humid weather, hundreds of devotees from the Buddhist community and other faiths gathered at the historic monastery to offer special prayers for world peace and universal brotherhood.
The Venuvan Vihar, known as one of the most significant Buddhist centers in Northeast India, was beautifully decorated with colorful flags and traditional lamps for the occasion.
Spiritual Observances: The Triple Blessing
The day’s proceedings began in the early hours of the morning with the chanting of sacred hymns and the lighting of incense. The “Triple Anniversary” commemorates three major milestones in the life of Siddhartha Gautama, all believed to have occurred on the full moon day of the month of Vaisakha.
Key Highlights of the Ceremony:
- Special Prayer Session: The head monk of Venuvan Vihar led a mass prayer, invoking the teachings of the “Middle Path” to resolve modern-day conflicts and social unrest.
- Buddha Vandana: Devotees participated in the Buddha Vandana and offered flowers, fruits, and candles at the feet of the serene golden statue of Lord Buddha.
- Meditation and Discourses: The afternoon featured spiritual discourses on the Dhammapada, focusing on the importance of non-violence (Ahimsa) and mindfulness in daily life.
Distinguished Attendance and Community Spirit
The celebration at Venuvan Vihar often attracts prominent state leaders and dignitaries. Speakers at the event emphasized that the philosophy of Lord Buddha is more relevant today than ever before, especially in a world seeking relief from violence and division.
Community Engagement:
- Dana (Charity): Following the morning prayers, the monastery organized a communal feast and distributed food to the underprivileged, embodying the Buddhist principle of Karuna (compassion).
- Cultural Programs: In the evening, local youths performed traditional devotional songs, adding a cultural dimension to the spiritual atmosphere.
Message of Global Harmony
Addressing the gathering, the monks noted that while this is the 2570th year of the celebration, the core message of “conquering oneself rather than others” remains the ultimate goal for humanity. The peaceful environment of Venuvan Vihar served as a perfect backdrop for this reflection, with many visitors spending the day in quiet contemplation within the monastery gardens.
As the full moon rises over Agartala tonight, the lighting of thousands of diyas (lamps) at the Vihar will symbolize the dispelling of ignorance and the spread of the light of wisdom across the state.
