AGARTALA | July 1, 2026: Outraged by a series of horrific sexual assaults and a sharp spike in gender-based violence across the state, a large delegation from the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA / Nari Samiti) today marched to the Purba Agartala (East Agartala) Police Station. The demonstration concluded with the submission of a formal deputation to the police authorities, demanding immediate structural intervention, swift trials, and strict punishment for perpetrators.
The immediate trigger for the protest was a recent, highly condemned incident in Nandanagar, where a sweet shop owner allegedly abducted and brutally raped a young girl.
Nandanagar Assault Triggers Statewide Fury and Civil Mobilization
Carrying placards and raising loud slogans against institutional complacency, the members of the women’s rights forum gathered outside the police station gates. Addressing the gathering, frontline organizers stated that the Nandanagar incident is not an isolated case but a symptom of a rapidly collapsing law and order framework regarding women’s safety in the state.
The leadership asserted that despite the registration of regular cases, slow police response times and delayed forensic packaging are allowing culprits to seek legal loopholes.
”The brutal incident in Nandanagar, where a prominent sweet shop owner brought a girl and sexually assaulted her, has shattered the collective conscience of our society. This is a direct reflection of how unsafe Tripura has become for women under the current administration. From urban junctions to rural blocks, crimes against women are rising at an alarming rate every single day. We have submitted this deputation at the Purba Agartala Police Station today to demand an absolute end to this lawlessness. We want zero administrative compromise, fast-tracked charge-sheets, and exemplary punishment that sends a clear warning to offenders,” a senior Nari Samiti representative declared to reporters on the field.
Core Structural Demands Placed Before the Police Administration
The AIDWA delegation met with senior inspectors at the Purba Agartala headquarters to register their multi-point charter of demands, urging immediate compliance on the following parameters:
- Fast-Tracking Nandanagar Case: Completing the ongoing forensic evaluation and filing a airtight charge-sheet within a strict, time-bound legal framework against the arrested sweet shop owner.
- Intensifying Urban CCTV Patrolling: Deploying dedicated police patrol units and installing functional CCTV grids across commercial zones, dark alleyways, and public transport nodes.
- Setting up Special Help Desks: Ensuring that the women’s help desks at all regional police stations are staffed with sensitized personnel capable of recording complaints without intimidating victims.
- Action Against Human Trafficking Networks: Launching a comprehensive crackdown on inter-state rackets targeting minor girls and vulnerable women under the guise of employment or financial aid.
The station authorities accepted the memorandum and assured the delegation that the Nandanagar case is being handled with top priority, adding that security measures and area patrolling around commercial pockets are being heavily scaled up.
